Anne Boyer

Anne Boyer (geboren 1973 in Topeka, Kansas) ist eine amerikanische Autorin, Lyrikerin und Essayistin. 2020 erhielt sie einen Pulitzer-Preis.

Werdegang

Anne Boyer wurde 1973 in Topeka, Kansas geboren und wuchs in Salina, Kansas auf. Dort besuchte sie die Schule und studierte Creative Writing an der Wichita State University.

Seit 2011 ist sie Professorin am Kansas City Art Institute. Sie lehrt dort gemeinsam mit Autorinnen wie Cyrus Console und Jordan Stempleman.

2016 war sie Bloggerin der Poetry Foundation in Chicago, für die sie eine Serie von Blogeinträgen über die Diagnose und Behandlung ihrer Brustkrebserkrankung schrieb. Dabei bezog sie sich auf andere Autorinnen, die an Brustkrebs gestorben sind wie etwa Kathy Acker oder Audre Lorde.

Seit ihrer Brustkrebsdiagnose im Jahr 2015 schreibt Boyer vermehrt über Krebs als eine Krankheit, die innerhalb eines medizinischen Systems verstanden werden muss, das wiederum Teil eines kapitalistischen, patriarchalen und rassistischen Systems ist:

„The system of medicine is, for the sick, a visible scene of action, but beyond it are all the other systems, family race work culture gender money education, and beyond those is a system that appears to include all the other systems, the system so total and overwhelming that we often mistake it for the world. […] This system we mistake for everything resides in a system-containing object like a tumor inside a system-containing object like a cancer patient who is a system-containing object inside a clinic, all of it also containing these systems of history.“

Boyer versteht sich als Marxistin und Feministin.

In einem Interview mit dem Believer Magazin bezeichnet sie sich als Kommunistin und spricht davon, nicht der „Lüge des Eigentums“ zu glauben: „I am definitely a communist. I believe that the world should be for the people and we should hold the world in common because it already is a common world. We shouldn’t believe the lie of property. Eight people own the same amount of money as the poorest half of the world does, but in fact they don’t own it; it’s ours. It’s labor that creates the world, and the people who think they have it have it wrongly.“

Sie ist die Autorin von The Romance of Happy Workers (2008), The 2000s (2009), My Common Heart (2011), Garments Against Women (2015), The Handbook of Disappointed Fate (2015) und The Undying (2019).

Ihre Texte wurden in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt, darunter Isländisch, Spanisch, Persisch und Schwedisch. Gemeinsam mit Guillermo Parra und Cassandra Gillig hat sie Texte von venezolanischen Autorinnen und Autoren wie Victor Malera Mora, Miguel James und Miyo Vestrini übersetzt.

Rezeption

Garments Against Women

Boyers Lyrikband Garments Against Women, der 2015 erschien, führte sechs Monate lang die Bestsellerliste für Lyrik der Small Press Distribution an. Die New York Times beschrieb den Band als „a sad, beautiful, passionate book that registers the political economy of life and literature itself.“

Chris Stroffolino beschrieb das Buch in The Rumpus als „widening the boundaries of poetry and memoir.“

The Undying Die Literaturwissenschaftlerin und Queer-Theoretikerin Lauren Berlant beschreibt die Form von Boyers The Undying wie folgt:

„’Breast cancer is a disease that presents itself as a disordering question of form,’ writes poet and essayist Anne Boyer. Form of what? Of testimony? Of exposure? Of vulnerability? Of injury? Of care? Of identity? Of time? Yes yes yes: no genres of life and art are spared by cancer or this book. All appear in The Undying as disordered forms, gestures of partial efficacy disturbed by chronic illness. Neither a form of life, exactly, nor a form of death, the breast cancer this book makes visceral takes on the shape of something lenticular, smudged like the present that’s defined by crises that are the effects of so many causes. The Undying multiplies the befores, durings, and afters of active-duty precarity.“

Für The Undying erhielt Boyer 2020 den Pulitzer-Preis für das beste Sachbuch. Aus der Laudatio:

“An elegant and unforgettable narrative about the brutality of illness and the capitalism of cancer care in America.”
