Greenish glass with prunts, applied drops of glass, that give the beaker its name, Krautstrunk, a German word meaning "cabbage stalk." Although primarily decorative, the prunts also provided a surer grip on the vessel, which was heavy when filled. While primarily intended as drinking vessels, small Krautstrünke of this type were often used as altar reliquaries. The relic was placed inside the vessel, which was then sealed with wax. Seals impressed into the wax often provide a means of dating the vessel. These beakers were made of Waldglas' or forest glass, so called because they were produced in forest glasshouses where there were plentiful supplies of wood fuel for the furnaces.
